projection devices for computers

I'm giving a talk at a conference soon, where it's been advertised that they will have hardware which can be used to project from a laptop onto a screen. I am interested in trying this out but know nothing about it..

Do I probably need special hardware for my laptop as well? If not, do I need a driver disk or special software? I'm planning to use windows but would prefer linux if possible.

Any general help would be appreciated.

They typically just plug into a video port on either a laptop or desktop. Most use LCD technology, but some newer ones use Digital Light Processing, based on Texas Instruments Digital Micromirror Device. Some models are limited to 640 x 480 in resolution while others are capable of XVGA resolutions so this may be a factor in laying out your presentation. You may want to determine the capability of the unit in advance.
