Broken mp3 codec?

All of a sudden, when I try to compress a video using VirtualDub, when I select mp3 as my audio codec it lists no mp3 formats in the right box.  All the other audio codecs are listed just fine.  Does anyone know how I can fix this, or how I can reinstall my mp3 codec?

If I'm not mistaken Microsoft has altered the mp3 codec shipping with XP so that it is read only. You will have to install another codec to write with. Radium and Fraunhofer are quite popular but I'm not involved enought to know the difference or benefits of one over the other.

I've been using this for the last six months without a secondary codec, then all of a sudden it stopped working.
