How can we add a user "johnd" to this PC?

Pentium 4 new PC with Windows 2000 Pro has no user called johnd. There was a computer name of johnd at one point. Now when we try to add user johnd we get the following message:

"The user johnd could not be added becaue this user already has permission to use this computer."

• Adding from Control Panel/Users and Passwords/Add
• Logged in to local machine only as Administrator/admin

We have deleted references to johnd from registry (profile keys, apparantly)

After getting this message did you try to login using the same username and password. Some times u get this message after trying to create a new user, but still u can login with the same username & password.

After getting this message, goto Control panel, Administrative option, computer management and check the User list.

Try.

Try typing the "NET NAME" command in a command box. If johnd or johnd$ is listed there, the computername wasn't changed properly and part of it stuck around.
