Hello all,

I have some emails IDs and I want to verify that, are these IDs are valid or not but I dont want to send any test mails to them. I checked it with sendmail and there is an option under sendmail (under linux 6.2 ESMTP Sendmail 8.9.3/8.9.3)

sendmail -bv cc@cc.com

this should verify the email is valid or not. But this is not working, even for wrong email IDs it is saying deliverable. Is there any other option to validate emails IDs.

Regards,

Vat

depends on your definition of "verify".

Say you wanted to verify someone@home.com

You can telnet home.com 25
issue the VRFY and EXPN commands to see if the mail program responds.

Section 3.3 of the RFC gives details. http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc0821.txt

Problem is many people configure their mail to not respond to this query and even if it does say it accepts, it does not mean it will be delivered (for example some spam processors might reject it before final delivery)

so your best bet is opt in email that requires a reply from the intened recepient. or watch the bounces come back....if you are not a spammer, shouldn't be a problem.....

you could also do a google search to see if that email is listed on a web page somewhere....that might increase the success rate...
