assignfile does not appeard to work with  a simple typed file complaining that that there is no
overloaded function any ideas this works fine in 5 down
type
Brec=   packed  record
                                  brd :byte;
                                 scnt :byte;
                              B_ID  :int64;
                            end;

brds = file of brec;
var
       bf:brds; //as var                     //declared either way

       bfile:file of brec;
begin
  Assignfile(bf,'rembrd.dta');        //neither one works
  Assignfile(bfile,'rembrd.dta');

perhaps you are using some units that have the same procedure name (AssignFile)?

Try with
  System.AssignFile(bf, 'rembrd.dta');

The problem was OoMisc (stock delphi unit) which was brought in by an Async4 serial port component
Oomisc has several overloaded assignfile function which were causing a conflict with the System unit
which is where assignfile is to be used from
