I had some encrypted files in Windows XP Pro.  My profile along with that of the only recovery agent were lost.

Now, I cannot access my most important files.

Please, help!

Is this on a standalone computer?

1. Did you run 'cipher' to generate the data recovery
.pfx and .cer files?
2. Did you then add a data recovery agent to group policy?
(the admin by default does not become the recovery agent)

Commented:
No, cipher was not used and a recovery agent was not added.

Yes, it is a standalone computer.

Bottom line - Is there a way to extract the private key from a corrupt profile?

My old profile is there but is corrupt.  It contains the key to decrypt my data.

Have you been helped here or is more needed?  Since time has passed since your last comment, an update is appreciated (in case things have changed).

No, I was not helped.

I posted this problem on several different help sites and forums and contacted Microsoft support.

No one has ever helped.  The only answer I have received is that the files cannot be recovered.  Microsoft also said recovery was impossible.

I recovered my key and my files last week.

I will never waste my time with help site, forums, or Microsoft support again.  I have been solving all my problems with computers and building my own computers for twenty years.  If you want something done right, do it yourself.

jbrown231, don't you think calling this site worthless, a bit orverstated?  We provide more answers than Micorsoft's own Techs.  Especially when it come to WindowsXP, we actually know more about it's bugs than they do.

This site has answered over 3.4 million questions in the short time we have existed.  M$ would also cost you hourly, or by incident.  I personally have built several hundered myslelf, but that really has nothing to do with the OS.  If your in Fat32, there is a relatively cheap program that will recover anything, inclunding pre corrupted files and deleted files.

I think I know of the recovery software that is being talked about, and it is called "GetDataBack", will recover anything that spins in Fat32.

And I am sure I saw one for NTFS.  The Fat32 was $99.00 compaired to 300-600 dollars to have it done profesionally.

Located at <edited link, member didn't want it>

I own this software, and it does work, I have collected lost data from HDD's that didn't work, but if it will spin, it will recover.

wlennon is a clown without a clue - that is not what anyone here is talking about.

Providing more answers than Microsoft techs aint hard.  The whole damned planet knows more about Windows XP bugs than Microsoft does.

In my opinion, calling the site worthless is right on target.  Don't worry, there are a lot of other support groups and forums that are equally worthless.

jbrown231, a clown.  ROFL that is one of the nicest comments you have made.  So, as shekerra has said...User Error.  I had the link removed from my comment...can you spell re-format.

Why be so angry, when you are the one who screwed it up in the first place.  Did you run a program such as Retrospect Backup, Norton Ghost, set your own Restore points, surely you new how to do that.  ahh, but you didn't, did you? *I am laughing so hard my side hurts, NO BACK UP. ROFL lol  ohhhh stop it.*

Gusess you counld have used that program after all.

In my humble opinion, I'd recommend that these points go to shekerra, or that points be split between shekerra and wlennon, but either way, move it to our PAQ and close it.

Who is angry?

I recovered all my files and my encryption key even though the jokers here said it couldn't be done and Microsoft said that it was impossible.

I only posted here to see if you were all worthless and brainless.

Guess what? I found out.

This has been a test and you failed.

ComTech, please handle the closure here.

No you don't, Bev.  ROFL .... all in all, this outcome is GREAT.  Who needs the abuse when all we want to do is help.  Baffled to the core.  Thanks, Ian and ComTech for ending jbrown231's misery.

I have no idea about the points here, perhaps a split between shekerra and wlennon?

Clueless.

But happy.
