quicktime 5 + appearance

Had an odd thing happen (on my G3 running OS 8.6) .... I wanted to see the new commercials on the Apple website, so I  downloaded one and was told I needed to upgrade Quicktime. I downloaded the QT 5.05 installer and ran it then watched the commercial .... no problems. But I then noticed my desktop picture had disappeared. I could not reload it or any other picture using the Appearance control panel. Desktop pictures could not be "set" and they did not preview in the control panel window. I uninstalled QT 5 and reinstalled QT 3, which I had on a disk, and everything was back to normal. Has anyone else had a problem like this and is there anyway around it....
