I am hosting sevaral web sites in my linux apache server, and installed proftp as the ftp server. Now I want to creat ftpusers for every website so that my clients can maintenance their website, and they cannot leave their www folder during the ftp session. I also want to create a superuser who can maintain all the hosted websites. Now the question is how to set up file permissions under every www folder, say for website1 i have ftpuser1, so for the file index.html under www1, if I set up as
"-rwx-r-xr-x   ftp1 guest ", then the superuser can't make changes to the file, in brief, can I set both the superuser the ftpuser1 as the owner of the file index.html?

heloo,

I do not have much experience with proFTPD.

Perhaps you might want to take a look at the FAQ:

http://www.proftpd.org/docs/faq/proftpdfaq.html
http://www.proftpd.org/docs/faq/proftpdfaq-5.html#ss5.12

Some example config;
http://www.proftpd.org/docs/example-conf.html

The complex examples has some neat config that worth looking at.

Overall, you might need to sync the path for your ftp-root with your website directory structure for your users.

How do you organize the hosted websites?  Does it sits in one directory tree, for example in /public/websites, and in the www.domain1.com, www.domain2.com dir. etc.

cheers.

The UserGuide contains a bunch of information that worth looking at:
