Device  Errors

I was checking Device manager in My Computers and its listing the following conflicts with a yellow explaination point for my keyboard(Compaq 107 keys, not 102) and my processor, " Nt Kern.vxd device loader couldn't load device - update driver " !  Whats that about and is their a safe and simple fix?
When i click next i am told that i have the current drivers do i wish to proceed, if i proceed and go to windows update for an update, i am told that my current drivers are closer to what i need then then newer ones, figure that one out! If a driver isn't loaded what am i using now?  If the drivers are already loaded are already current. why do i need an update?  As far as i can tell everything is humming right along, so why a conflict warning? . . .  All i have is a win 95 and win 98 update on CD . . .  Bye . . .

I would say that if it is not causing problems, don't worry about it.  I have seen plenty of computers that had exclamation points on devices but they worked okay (my current config included).  Don't worry about it until it starts acting up.

Try a shutdown for a couple of minutes, then reboot holding CTRL and select SAFE MODE, check Device Manager again in SAFE MODE and remove any erroneous devices, all in error if multiples shown.  Any time I find Unknown Devices or errors, I choose to address the problem, but slink9 may have the choice you wish.  Safe Mode shows you problems you have that normal mode does not.

It also helps to know what things you may have changed recently to see what may have caused this problem.  Some feel it "it's not broke, don't fix it", but my experience has shown me that if Device Manager shows a problem, it is just a matter of time before I need to deal with it, so choose to deal with it when I find it.

Good luck,

That would be the short version of what I said.  But, hey, maybe it is just a bother to know that it is there.
I spent quite a bit of time trying to get rid of the couple that I have and even more time fixing the other stuff that I broke while trying to fix what wasn't broken.  I learned a lesson from that.

Right click the devie(s) in question, select properties, there should be an error code on the first tab-if there isn't then I agree with the above posts, if there is, then report it here.

Cheers.

I don't like the idea of not fixing the error, what if it gets worst out of the blue, then whats happens?  I have never done anything in safe mode, so whats that suggestion about and how do i do it,it sounds scary.
I am getting the same message and code for both conflicts(?) Keyboard and processor support - " The Ntkern.Vxd device loaders for this device could not load the device driver - Code 2 ".  Whats that about?
I just can't delete these devices, reboot and expect windows to reinstall fresh drivers, correct?  Thats assuming i would be able to reboot.  My setup needs these drivers to work , right, but if the drivers aren't installed what am i working off of now?
Even what i try to get a new drivers from windows update, it wants a floppy to search or win 98se CD, which i don't have.  Any  ideas, bye . . .

I just checked an older posting, i could line up the scroll bar with the black line that appears between log out and questions and read the entire question and comments.  With this posting, my questions and your comments run off my screen to the right and out of view!
Whats that about and how do i get back to a normal format, i must have mis clicked some setting - bye

SAfe Mode, restart machine and when you see " Starting Windows 98..." start tapping F8 on the keyboard , you will see a windows start menu, eventually, choose option 3 (safe mode) using the arrow keys on the keyboad, hit enter on keyboard, remove all duplicate devices you see listed here. Restart PC. See below first:

Yes, you can delete the device and expect it to be re-installed, BUT only if the win98 setup files are located on the harddrive. Since you do not have a win98 setup disk I am assuming that you have a proprietory machine (Compaq,Dell,Gateway, etc, etc, etc) and therefore the CAB(win98 setup) files SHOULD be on the harddrive, if they're not, and you don't have the setup disk then I suggest you get a setup disk from your local PC retailer before removing anything OR contact the manufacturer of the machine(COmpaq, Dell, Gateway...etc,etc,etc) and get their input on the windows setup files.

If you don't feel comfortable doing any of this, then don't. You are not (obviously) obligated to take anyone's advice, and just because we are techs with experience DOES NOT mean we are always right. So the old saying " If it ain't broke, don't fix it" could be very applicable to this situation.

Cheers.

That sounds like a good solution to any problem.  Let's all solve our Win98 problems by zapping 98 and installing 95.  Maybe that is the solution to any XP problems also.

WOW ... most interesting.  I guess it always gets down to end-user preferences and you've chosen to go back to your prior Operating System; which sure wouldn't have been my choice given all the improvements in subsequent releases, but always your call.

Given the amount of time spent here by us all and the changes in problems noted from the original question, a deletion and refund doesn't make sense to me at all.

For special handling needs, such as the splitting of points or a request for a PAQ, post a zero point question in the Community Support topic area with your request and include this link.  Again, the information posted here to help you should have worked if you had interacted with us in a timely fashion to report results through the collaboration effort and methodically tried the recommendations posted.  Thus, a deletion should not be processed, at most a PAQ, in my humble opinion; also don't think a refund should be issued here.

Yep, Slink, unfortunately it turns out to be the case.  I'll learn yet, ROFL (maybe).

babelov -> We each choose our path, from my point of view, I also ask many questions and get excellent help at this site.  Often times I find my own solution, but show my appreciation to those willing to take their time to help me by splitting points and/or awarding for the "effort", even if I do find my own solution.  I NEVER ask to have a question deleted, if others can benefit from the troubleshooting information which is contains, because in my opinion, it's all about helping and being helped.  What is clear to me also is that a successful outcome and expeditious results are obtained when each comment entered get a response from the Asker in a methodical manner, as said.

Although I feel you've been given help here, it's your choice on the closure; unless the participating experts disagree.  I, personally, don't want any points from you for this and am not likely to step in to help you in the future because to me it's all about "attitude" and am not terribly thrilled about yours!

Re. the load failures in bootlog.txt, many are normal, one of which is ntkern.vxd, among others, based on system configuration and needs.  Bootlog.txt info.

If a Moderator is involved and you still feel you want a refund, I'd vote for a PAQ versus Deletion.

How can you award points and a grade to someone without getting a fix?  What kind of a message that that send.  This web site should not be a game
First try like crazy to get your problem fixed, then award the points.  No fix  =  no points/grade . . .

Babelov is 100% correct. We are not here to comment on whether someone is Sauve OR Nice enough to reward good 'ol fashion effort and goodwill. I'm here for the learning experience and to help others. If Babluv thinks we didn't give enough information or a fix, then he is absolutely right in NOT giving us the points, he has chosen to go backwards to an older OS and thats up to him not us. SOme of my clients are still using win95(%&^$$)....

Anyways, I know what the error means, he has a Compaq Keyboard and the ntkern.vxd, which is the driver that loads the device=keyboard, couldn't find the proper keyboard driver for the device, so it loaded a generic keyboard driver(which was working fine-and would have worked fine)which is different from the driver meant for the Compaq keyboard, only in the fact that it would not drive the special functionality keys on the keyboard, such as the internet key and the music key(programmable quick acces buttons),so, like I said go to the Compaq website and look for the drivers for the Keyboard, if they aren't the re then it doesn't really matter, unless you miss those quick access buttons that much, AND, since you reverted to an archaic OS compared to whats out there right now, I guess, you are REALLY attached to those quick access buttons.

Cheers All.

If Rayt333, reads the above he would have another mental breakdown, I can take the fact that your a wise guy and live with it, but Rayt333 couldn't.
Yes, you are right, rewarding failure is not the way that any web site should be run.
Yours is the best guess yet, but not a fix.  I have used used a Compaq keyboard, which never felt right, then switched to using MS standard and Gateway.  I've been testing both to see which works better, theirs a huge difference between both.
The Ntkern.vxd error would not allow me to use either keyboard, so that made my pc unuse-able until fixed!  I came here for help, got zip, Went to the MS Knowledge base, wasted 20+ sheets of paper, got zip, Had 2 pc greeks take a look it they could'nt figure it out!
As for this being an "Archaic"(?) OS, thats just your personal two cents worth, and i can live with that. . .
Please feel free to tell what your next step would have been, seeing how all of the above steps failed.  Is their a hidden web site thats better then MS Knowledge base?  Don't keep it to yourself!  Do you mine going against E/E and providing a link to a site that that doesn't reward failure, i don't think so.
  I rest my case, for now -  Bye . . .

Just for the record, I provide all I can for the "client", if that means posting a link to another website then thats what I do, if EE doesn't like that...to bad. I'll go to; inna second; if I hafta put up with that CORPORATE BS. EE is for the people, or was, now I'm not so sure, it seems to have been taken over by profit driven individuals who only care about the bottom line, I said it SEEMS to have, not it HAS, SO- time will tell.

jatcan, pardon me, but who said anything to you about posting links, we do it hundreds of times a day, the only link you cannot post, is to a direct competitor of this site, and I frankly do not see that here, nor is it mentioned.

The corporate BS you speak of, are two former employees that were layed off when the site WAS Corp. by J.P. Morgan.  These guys took out loans, used thier credit cards, mortgages on the line.  I hardly think that is Corporate, but if they don't recoup their money from revenues and advertizing, the site will just shut down for good.

If I may be so bold, where did your last post come from? It is not related to the site at all.  Most aren't making a dime as of yet, as paychecks go.  You were here from 1999 till now, ever wonder what happened to Linda, darinw, IanB, redarin...etc  They were not getting paid and they stuck it out for a while anyway, because they believed in EE, as we do now, probably even more now.  In fact as of July of last year, the site ran out of money and went into recievership because J.P. Morgans CEO blew the whole wad of quite a large some of money.

Regardless of the problems we had or are having is much better than it was before, just last week, we doubled our servers and our ISP bandwidth to keep up with all the new members and traffic, the directors have voluntarily given up their salries as EE needed it to continue to survive.

I have been here as a User, Expert, Modertor, Admin, and now Director.  And this is besides a full time job where I have been for more than 25 years, but I have always made time for EE.

Thanks for listening...

There was talk about posting links or extra help in threads a while back. It was thought that instead of doing this, we could have a "General" tips and tricks section for common situations, nothing came of it.

I also, don't begrudge anyone making a buck, especially if they have money, blood, sweet and tears invested,  thats what I'm in it for to, plus the fun of it and helping people.

I did say "I said it SEEMS to have, not it HAS, SO- time will tell."

I'm sure these guys are in it for the money as much as they are in it for "helping people", I would be to. BUT, at the same time, you have to remember that this site was started as a free help site, since I signed up anyways, all I'm saying is if it gets to corporate/commerical I'll leave thats all.

I wasn't blaming anyone or accusing anyone of anything. It's my decisions and mine only. If, god forbid, it ever comes to that ( I DO love it here!), I'll leave gracefully, won't post anything, just won't come back, and thats that.

I have had some bad experiences here, but mostly, I have benefitted from EE and learned while having fun. I'd like to see it stay the casual place it is where helping the "client" is an inter-active and sometimes beneficial learning experience for the experts to, I've learned lots, like I said already. When it becomes coporate or commercialized it ruins the experience for me, my opinion only. I get corporate all day.

Anyways, you won't hear another word on the subject from me. I was only responding to babluvs accusation of me posting a link from another website, and I quote, "Do you mine going against E/E and providing a link to a site that that doesn't reward failure, i don't think so."

I truly hope this incident can be ended.

Cheers.

Sorry jatcan, I get carried away with something I truely care about, I enjoy helping and I learn something new every day, so it is a great give and take.

I do agree that if it became Corportate, like my fulltime job, I would have to make a decision.

We agree on the rest.  Thanks for the note.

By the way, this Babelov person has been uncooperative and a PITA before.  You try to help and get blasted for it.  I say good riddance and I hope we never cross paths (or bits and bytes) again.
I was in on one of the tirades earlier and thought a change in attitude had happened, that is why I got into this one.  A tiger can't change his stripes...

Well, it seems we all agree on three main points:

1.) it's a good thing babluv has left(again)
2.) corporate/commerialistic "atmosphere's" are not for us(unless of course EE wants to hire me and pay me, then I would put up with ANY type of corporate/commerialistic "atmosphere")
3.) EE is still the same funloving place it always has been.

And finally, I must be saying the right things(for once in my life) cause Comp.101 hasn't told me to shut up yet, publicly OR privately.

I'll think I will take that queue, and forget about this thread now, before I DO say something to invoke the ire of our favorite MOD....

Cheers All!
