Sound used to work, now only blips of sound

When playing a midi file, sound works fine. When playing streaming media, we hear a brief blip of sound (less than 1/2 second) at the beginning of the file, and occasionally another blip or two of sound a long length apart (seconds/minutes apart).

Have uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Media Player and RealOne player.

What type of streaming media and where are you getting it from?

Sounds like from the InterNet and your connection is not fast enough to support it.

did u try upgrading the DirectX version ?
it might do the trick.
We have cable internet, very fast downloads. Have tried about 20-30 sources of streaming media, at different speeds
Hmm

If you are on cable and you have tried various sources then are you perhaps going through a firewall?

No firewall.
Try here.  This link talks about problems you may be having with Windows Media Player.

Same exact issue with RealPlayer, though. Seems likely to be hardware installation related.
If you can download files at a good clip then it should't be hardware related.

More likely your settings as the two links indicate.  Your software may not be set for high speed streaming.
I will test a bunch of settings for speed this evening.
Apologies, viewed page on a borrowed computer logged in under another account. I (not esc_toe) will test a bunch of settings for speed this evening.
After experimenting with settings, all sound now unavailable, including MIDI. Will uninstall and reinstall players.
