The Creative Software Synth cannot load MIDI wavesets. MIDI playback has been disabled.

I have a customer's computer change the motherboard and CPU. This computer running Win 98.
The computer running OK but it come up a error message stated that "The Creative Software Synth cannot load MIDI wavesets. MIDI playback has been disabled." at startup everytime.

However, the MIDI still working OK.

The customer have contacted Creative Tech Support and they adviced that the customer should format the HDD and reinstall all program. Of cours, this will sort out the problem but I really do not think this is necessary.

I would really be grateful for any advise on this matter.

jwlchan,

Try reinstalling the soundcard drivers.  Firsly remove the old drivers, then install them again.  See if that resolves your problem.

I have uninstalled the driver abd reinstalled it before but the problem still there.

Try going into the registry, after having removed all of the Creative labs drivers/Sound card/midi drivers etc etc.
Find any Creative labs stuff and remove it from the registry.  I would highly suggest making a backup of the registry.  Before doing such things.  If you mess with the wrong stuff, you may render your OS inoperable.

Then reinstall the drivers again.

Another thing you can try is move the Sound card to a different slot.  But before doing so, Remove the drivers again.  Then move card to different slot, and reinstall drivers.

Yes,this sound like a good idea. I will advice my customer to do so and see if this work. I will let you know as soon as I have feed back from my customer.

Changing a mainboard generally requires a fresh install of the operating system due to all the registry garbage left from the old hardware. Creative's tech support is corrrect in their advice, otherwise you may find other problems popping up besides the sound card. T

I have changed motherboard for computers lot of time but never experience any problem before.
I shall try to edit the registry and see what happen.

I have uninstall ALL Creative programs from this computer. I also remove all words in Creative in the registry. HOwever, the following still come up just after the computer boot to win 98 and before the desktop come up.

I would like to know if anyone have any idea.

I dunno what else to try other than that.  Cept make sure you have the latest Creative Drivers.......

Which Card is this in question?

This is Creative Live 1024. I have spent 3 hours with the customer but earn nothing!!! :-(

I have also remove the card out then this error message disappear. Once I place the card in again it start to install the driver by itself from Win 98 and error message come back after reboot.

Do you think this may be a fault card?

I do not really want to go back to the customer and earn nothing again.

if you have a test sound card.....try a replacement.  See if that works.  if could be a faulty card.

I do noth think is a faulty card as the midi still working. This is only a mislead error message.

You could possibly be right...but what is causing the error message?  If it is not the drivers....And not the card....something is off...Sound Card is the easiest/cheapest route to try first...

This problem come up after the mortherboard and CPU changed. The Creative Sound Card Live 1024 auto run the driver from the system. I think the driver program is badly written so it was not completly overwrite from the previous.

However, it must be a way to remove the old driver completely to sort out this problem. This may be a VXD problem. Any idea?

Yes. I also reboot the system without the card in the system. There is no error then. However, Once I put the card in. THe PNP start work and install the driver. After that, the error start again.
Anymore idea?

I have asked the customer to reinstall Win 98. The first time this come up with problems as the system crashed before the installation completed.

After the customer reinstall the old registary all the problem gone.

After all, the reinstall have over write any dll and VXD files problem.

I feel that now I shall cancel this question as I have sort out the problem by myself.

I've had this problem in the past, here is the fix (for windows 98)

go to start/settings/control panel/multimedia
click the MIDI tab, select single instrument, and choose "Creative S/W Synth"  I don't know what causes this, but this works, the cards work fine, and have no midi problems, but for some reason go buggy.

Have you tried any of the other midi synth devices, or choosing single device and using default, what about reinstalling the drivers from cd all over again, including the .sf2 packages and all that that contains the instruments (just the drivers won't do this)

This problem was start in July three months from to day.

I remember that I have uninstalled the Creative programs and reinstall again. I also have try to change slot and all the basic stuff. The Creative Tech support said there is no way to sort out this problem a part from format the HDD again. Fristly I do not think so and the customer also do not want to do this as he have to pay me again.

If you said you have sort out the problem by using your suggestion but why it don't work with my customer? Please see the above history. I think I have just leave this on one side for now.
