My suggestion would be to go to http://borland.com/products/downloads/download_jbuilder.html and download JBuilder7.  If you are just using this for personal use you can use their free Personal version.  Otherwise you have to buy a registered copy.  JBuilder is a very nice IDE that has a compiler built into it.

JBuilder is an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that has a build in SDK (software development kit) for Java.  Basically, JBuilder is the editor, compiler, and runner for a java program.  You don't have to use an IDE though.  You can just download (for free) the SDK from java.sun.com, install it on your computer, set up all the necessary system variables, and use it to compile and run your programs.

Well, again it depends on what you want to use it for, but if you are only using it for personal projects (read the license to see exactly what they allow as I'm not 100% certain) I would get the Personal version as it's free.  The other versions cost anywhere from $400 - $3000.
