AOL, Computer won't talk to modem

533 MGHz computer with 128 mg RAM...new modem PCI PnP 56K...Windows 98 sees modem, software installs ok...but no dial tone, can't find modem.

AOL can not detect modem neither can "Add New Hardware"...yet win 98 picks it up everytime if you uninstall it.

By the way I checked the phone cord to be sure it was plugged in correct slot.

  "no dial tone" and "Can not find modem" are two error messages I receive at different times. AOL can not find the modem either. The wall jack has dial tone. The diagnostic tab shows modem connect to com 2, modem appears but info button returns nothing just an error message that says modem is not responding (brand new modem), there are no yellow trianglse next to any device in the system devices. Incidently I did try switching PCI slots with same results.

Is Windows 98 updated with WindowsUpdate and current?  If not, recommend that first.

Also, what is your Motherboard and BIOS date?  Make sure that a BIOS update isn't needed.  

I'd also recommend a normal shutdown, leave off 2-3 minutes, then reboot holding CTRL and choose SAFE MODE.  Check Device Manager for any unknown devices, what ports are there; remove any errors or multiples shown in error and reboot to rediscover.  Often problems are seen in Safe Mode, but not normal mode, including ghost ports.

The article is very explicit with step-by-step help; let us know more about your Modem (type/model) and setup if this has not helped you resolve the problem.  Also, try running the Modem Diagnostics from control panel.

Update your AOL to current version to make sure you've got the fixes that have been rolled out, also verify that you have the correct and current drivers for your Modem (inf).
