c1037ae6 error with forestprep

Can someone give possible suggestions for getting past this error message?  Please read the following first:

I am installing on the only DC in the domain in the forest as the Administrator account which is a member of Administrators, Domain Admins, Schema Admins, and Enterprise Admins.  I have run DCDIAG and NETDIAG and all tests pass.

I have checked DNS and the server appears to be registering itself properly.  It is the only DNS server in an AD-integrated zone.  Reverse DNS is setup as AD-integrated as well.  Everything appears to be registering properly.

I have tried running from a Member Server in the domain.  I have tried creating a new account and placing it in the above mentioned groups, then running it from this account.  None of this has worked.  I have also tried using Schema Manager (snap-in) and allowing Schema Modifications.

I have rebooted the DC more times than I can count and now I have taken up head-banging :(

I really need to get E2K installed, as it is a prerequisite for my office's Cisco Unity (voicemail) implementation.  The project is on hold until I can get this problem resolved.  Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Eric

Try making the user an Administrators (built in local) of member server and the above groups you mentioned.

root of the install drive, there should be a log called
Exchange Server setup progress.log

can you please rename this log, then try forestprep again, then post the contents of the log for me to review?

Is this the error you are getting?

Extending the schema in the Active Directory failed.
Please consult the following error log: %s\ldif.err.

Too many email signature changes to deal with?

Are you constantly being asked to update your organization's email signatures? Do they take up too much of your time? Wouldn't you love to be able to manage all signatures from one central location, easily design them and deploy them quickly to users. Well, you can!

In case anyone else runs into this problem, this was my fix:

Jim,

Yes, I got my problem resolved.  I wound up using
LDIFDE.  You combine all of the schema*.ldf files from
the E2K CD using the copy command, eg. "copy
schema*.ldf test.ldf"

then run "LDIFDE -i -f test.ldf" or something like
that.  I can't remember the exact syntax.

It should try to import all of the schema updates.
Mine errored out half way through.  If this happens to
you, turn on NTDS Diagnostics Logging:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Diagnostics,
change all values from 0 to 1 (or higher, but 1 worked
for me).  Then check the event viewer, Directory
Services, to see what entry is failing and fix it.

Then run LDIFDE again.  You will see what is failing.
In my case it was an entry called labeledURI.  There
was an already existing entry for this and the
LDAPDisplayName attribute was set already.  I removed
this single line from the test.ldf file, reran LDIFDE
and voila, it succeeded.  You should run forestprep
after this completes.

I was then able to run FORESTPREP and then DOMAINPREP
(I was amazed).  The rest of my E2K installation went
fine after this also.  Be sure to turn off diagnostics
logging in the registry after you get finished as it
negatively impacts performance.

Oh, you will also need to set Schema Manager (or
registry entry) to allow Schema Modifications to run
LDIFDE.  I ran LDIFDE on the Schema Master and it took
a long time.  If you use the -v (verbose) option, it
will tell you every entry being added and you will
know it's not locked up.

Good luck!

Eric
