Has anyone successfully set up a newer 80-GB hard drive on one of these motherboards?

I'm trying to set up D540X-4K 80-gig hard drive on one; currently the BIOS doesn't seem to want to detect it, so I'm wondering if either the drive is not supported at all, or if I might be able to make it work by updating the BIOS to the latest version.

The only way that you'll be able to get that drive fully supported is by adding a PCI controller card. At a cost of about $30, it may be a very good investment, as it will also support the top speed of the drive. I recommend Promise brand controllers. See:

This is for an ATA-100 card. For an ATA-133 card, the price is about $15 more.

Thanks, I'd thought about this and just needed a second opinion to convince me.  :)

Glad we could help. I've used the 503+ in a few systems I've built, and been very happy with the board's performance over the years. No speed demon by today's standards, but a solid performer compared to other Socket 7 boards.
