edmund,

mailstat could be used to get the incmoming and outgoing number of messages and size.

I believe there is program to analyze the syslog for more detailed information in the mail

There is a few link on sendmail faq;
http://www.sendmail.org/faq/section4.html#4.7
I hope the links are helpful.

cheers.

Edmund,

I really have no idea on such stats.

Besides ant eater, there are other maillog (syslog) analyzer that could do such a job.  In fact some commertical software like Webtrends should have a package to analyze syslog messages.

I bet it depends more on how you expect the output to be.  Some techie would prefer the plain-old text based, or cvs would do fine -- since it could be easily integrated to other apps.  However, the management would be opting for a much "catchy" report.

And, again, given the fact that those log analyzer would be looking at the same old syslog format, they would pretty much would be massaging the same data, it's just the output might differ.

Personally, I would go for cheap, simple, that can do the job.  Some hacking in the code to make it looks nicer would actually makes me learn a bit of this (and a bit of that).

cheers.
