Eamon,

I don't know what "ebis-xml" is, but XSD is a schema language (it's fully title is XML Schema and an introduction to it's specification can be found here: http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-0/ ).

XML Schema is a more sophisticated (than DTD, or Document Type Definition) mechanism for expressing the constraints on XML instance documents. The schema (commonly a file with a .xsd extension) is in itself an XML document that describes what's allowed in instance documents that claim to conform to that schema. They are used to enforce validity of documents passed between (or within systems), and to form the basis of an agreement or contract between components or systems that exchange XML documents.

The documents are checked for validity by a "validating parser" (a regular parser in some kind of "validating" mode), that reports any non-conformance in the instance document.

Note that "validity" and "well-formedness" are two separate concepts in XML: a document can be well-formed (syntactically and structurally correct) without necessarily being valid (conformant to it's schema).

WMB
