E-mail does not leave the Outbox

I have recently installed Veritas Backup Exec v8.6 on my File Server to do my daily backups. I have configured the notification setup to notify myself and the helpdesk, whether the backup jobs were successfull or failed.
I've installed a MAPI client for this purpose ie. Outlook 2000.
I've tried configuring Outlook 2000 with "corporate & workgroup" as well as the "internet mail only" methods, but the e-mails keep getting stuck in the outbox.

Previously when I had Backup Exec v7 and Outlook 98 it all worked fine.

I've tried everything suggested in Technet and on the Microsoft website, but with no luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

I would say that you need to run Veritas using a certain Service account. Then set up a profile with Outlook configured using that account. I don't think MAPI is a good way to go here though.

I would send using SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol). Define the SMTP server, the account, and the message and you're on your way! This method is much more reliable.

Specifically, from the links supplied, this was my solution for the same issue with Outlook 2000...
After you send a message, Outlook moves it into your Outbox. When Outlook establishes a connection to your mail server, it attempts a delivery and a copy of the sent message appears in your Outbox. If you open and close a message while it is still in your Outbox, you change the status of the message and it is not sent. The message title will no longer appear in italic formatting in the Outbox Messages view.

To return the message to Send status, open the message, and click Send on the message toolbar. The message title should become italicized in the Outbox Messages view. During the next connection with the mail server Outlook should deliver the message.

SMTP doesn't have all of the functionality available when using MAPI, such as attaching log files to notifications.

Perform the following steps to ensure you rMAPI setup is OK

1)Cofigure backupexec to use a specific service account
2)Create an Exchange mailbox for this service account
3)Log on using that service account and configure an Outlook profile
4)Copy the profile to another profile with the same name as the user account
5)Open Backup Exec and go to notification setup, setup e-mail notifications with the profile name and account password

Backup Exec should now be configured correctly.

Thanks for all the input.

With regards to Astaec, I have tried the web sites you suggested, and I agree with Hstiles on using SMTP.

With regards to Hstiles's suggestions....well, that's exactly how I had installed it, but does not want to work.

However, I'm curious to know what you meant by point 4) to copy the profile to another profile with the same name as the user account?  Can you give me clarity on this?

Thanks

Johan

Thanks, listening further.  Have you applied all the recommended Service Patches for your environment (for Office as well as the Exchange Server)?

You're asked for a profile name.  By Default this is set up as 'MS Exchange Settings'.  It's easier and far more intuitive to use a profile with a name that matches the mailbox name, hence my instruction to copy the profile.

You also want to set Outlook to use this profile when starting

Okay, I had it installed like that, but still does not want to work. I've even uninstalled Outlook 2000 and reinstalled, and recreated the profile as you had suggested. However, when I open Outlook and click on the outbox the messages go.

Yes, I have also installed all the service patches.

This thing has me really stumped !!!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Just one message stuck in the outbox?  have you tried sending other test messages (after moving the problem message to another folder) to see if it finalizes?

Highfive Gives IT Their Time Back

Highfive is so simple that setting up every meeting room takes just minutes and every employee will be able to start or join a call from any room with ease. Never be called into a meeting just to get it started again. This is how video conferencing should work!

No, all the messages sent by Backup Exec. ie. job succeeded, job cancelled, job failed or operator attention get stuck in the outbox.

If I leave Outlook open it all works fine as it should.
However, if I close Outlook and log off, the messages remain in the outbox until I open Outlook again, then they go on their own without any assistance.

This has me baffled !!!!!!

Unless I'm completely out to lunch (which is possible these days), this behavior is always true here as well for Outlook 2000.  If/when Outlook is exited, O2K asks about items in the Outbox and if you want to send prior to logging off O2K, if user says "no" the items remain in the Outbox until O2K is reloaded, then sent.

Aestec,

I imagine that you are saying to go into Outlook and turn on the feature "Send outgoing mail immediately"?

Am I right?

Hi astaec,

In the past before I upgraded to Backup Exec v8.6 and Outlook 2000 it worked as follow:

Backup Exec would send the notification message via Outlook 98 (outlook would be closed and server would be at logon screen)to the selected e-mail addresses. Since the upgrade I cannot get it to send the messages the same way.

Yep, jmiller47.

Johan, I've never used Outlook 98, and baffled why what once worked no longer does, unless the required settings didn't migrate and/or aren't supported with Backup Exec v.8.6.  I hope to have some more time this weekend to explore this further this weeekend, although hopefully jmiller47 will have some clues for you (us).  Sorry about not being more responsive this week, I am up to my eyeballs in work.

Thanks for your interest.

Before I actually installed all this on the actual server, I had built a test server with Backup Exec v8.6 and Outlook 2000, connected to the same domain and network.

I did backup tests for about two weeks, and believe me it all worked fine, including the e-mail notification. If I fire up the test server it still works. I did exactly the same installation with the same settings on the actual server, but guess what???? it does not want to work !!!!!!  I did exactly as JMiller has suggested.

I suppose thats why we all have jobs today, if it was all so simple they would not need us.....

Thanks

Johan

ROFL, so true, indeed.

Sometimes, depending on the order of things done, some service patches get blown (need reinstallations).  For lack of better ideas, check www.officeupdate.com product catalog (just in case) ...  if life were as simple as I wish it were, we'd have more time to explore these anomolies.
