MicroAngelo allows you to create icons of all sizes too and is downloadable on a trial basis. It has a facility for importing bitmap files.....
Try IconMaker, from IconFactory. I've used it with great success to build .ico files optimized for Win98, Win2K, and WinXP graphical standards. It comes with great documentation as well:

http://www.iconfactory.com/iconbuilder.asp

In addition, I found it helpful to refer to Microsoft's MSDN site (http://msdn.microsoft.com) for official style guides for the various standards of iconography (different in the various flavors of Windows). For instance:
   http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnwxp/html/xptheming.asp

Good luck!

soniya i had already tried cdr 10 , but there's no option to export in .ico type . i'm sorry .

i 'm off to try the other 2 options , micoangelo & iconmaker

I get an option in Coreldraw 10 where I can export as .ico , may be you have not used the full installation of Coreldraw, that is why you are not getting this option.

microangelo & iconmaker didn't work either . they too forced the icons onto 16x16 , 24x24 , 32x32 or 48x48 squares

god , there must be a way out

.ico files are Windows resource files -- they *must* conform to standard sizes, or Windows wouldn't know what to do with them. You could change the proportions so the icons aren't square, but they would still have to sized to fit within the standard Windows icon sizes. Through Win2K, this is 32x32 pixels. If you're specifically designing icons for use in Windows XP, you can go up to 48x48, but most users will still see those icons at 32x32 or smaller (depending on their version of Windows, and their view settings).

This is the challenge of icon building, and what makes it such a strange and painstaking art. Making a good-looking icon at 48x48 pixels in millions of colors is a bit tough...but making the same icon look decent at 16x16 pixels in Windows-16 color palette is enough to make you tear out your hair. But as far as I know, trying to make, say, a 90x30 pixel .ico file is like trying to make a 4x6" floppy disk. It just won't work with the standards that your computer is built on.
huafi,

that isn't actually true. Microangelo has the option to allow you to create custom icon sizes and Windows will support them. What you are referring to is the fact that, on the desktop for example, these will be crunched down to 32x32 by the OS, for display purposes. That doesn't mean that the file is 32x32, though, and if you tried to use the icon in some other program, you will see it in all its over-sized glory! I have made some fairly large icons in the past for inclusion in programs of my own....
OK, I just created a new icon in Microangelo. the max custom size it would allow me to create was 64x64. On the Edit menu is an option to 'Open Bitmap as Image'. I selected a large bitmap and Microangelo squeezed it down to 64x64 to create a new icon. Easy.
A-ha! I just created one of 90x30 in Microangelo. I was mistaken when I said that the max it would allow was 64x64. If you click the up arrows on the spin controls that determine the dimensions, the value will not increment beyond 64. However, you can type in much larger numbers into the textbox. Problem solved.
zombeen, sending an icon of size 30x90 made in corelDraw as requested by you at your address
