i have  a win98se machine that stopped working. it was verrrry slow, i rebooted and got a invalid boot device. used a boot disk, did fdisk/mbr and it booted to a C:>, no win98.

did a DIR and found all directories gone, and the remaining files were strange. large files ( 2 gig) named brazil, holland, h, enc, etc, and a number of files with happy faces as part of the name.

also, there were 4 partitions on the drive. the c has the above, d says invalid media, f invalid drive. the other partition appears to be intact.

fdisk shows the partitions are screwed up. i know i need to reformat, etc. my question is anyone know which virus might have caused this??

i had just removed an old inoculate it anti virus and reinstalled norton 5 anti virus with the current definitions. did a scan after the install and no problems noted. i also use zone alarm firewall, and, oh btw, have an 18 year old son who gets some downloads thru this computer.

thanks
