Mail Document Body not displayed using Browser

Our company recently upgraded to Lotus Notes R5.  We are using the new web browser client option to give our  salesreps the ability to access their Notes mail using any browser, so they don't have to have mail forwarded to their homes or be in the office to get their mail.

The problem we have is that some messages don't display in the browser.  The one sample I found in my mailbox was from one of our salesreps.  When I open the message in the browser (IE 5.5 on Win 2K) I see the header information, but not the body text.  If I open the same message using my regular Notes client, I have no trouble.  I can also forward the message from the browser and the body is included in the new outgoing message.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, have you been able to solve it?

I don't know if this is an incoming or outgoing setting problem, but it does appear to be a problem only with our own Notes users.

Is the message empty or just unreadable?
Please check in the HTML source if the body's content is there somewhere.

The message body does not display in the browser - it is present, since I can read it from my Notes client and if I forward the message, it appears quoted in the new message.

If you set one of those messages to edit-mode, and verify the hide options (document properties), has the "hide for web"-option perhaps been set?
Strange problem!

No links available Arun?
Hey Crak !

Nope No Links for now... I am just loitering here !

:-)
Arun.
Hello Tom,

If the mail is encrypted you will have this problem in browser. Ask user not to encrypt mails.

Did you ever heard or tried iNotes?

Check www.lotus.com/inotes for further info, it is a right solution for your need !!

~Hemanth
When I try to view an encrypted message from the browser, it displays an alternate text warning that the message is encrypted.  The problem we have is that nothing displays in the body portion of the message.

I have heard of iNotes but haven't tried it.  Since our salesreps would have to install it on their personal computers, I would have a hard time controlling copies.  Also, when there is turnover in the sales department, it would be difficult to ensure that unnecessary copies were deleted.

--Tom Pellitieri
Sorry... missed a response...

I don't see a "hide for web" option when I look at the design in Document Properties.  Any ideas where it might be?

--Tom Pellitieri
Based on your remark about the "alternate text warning that the message is encrypted", the hide option is probably NOT the cause...
Hemanth got it right: the message is encrypted. Notes is capable of decrypting, but the browser is not.
Okay...I'm confused then...

If the message is encrypted (which, by the way, the Encrytped flag on the message is question was set to "0"), shouldn't I see the alternate text from the browser?  I had someone else send me an encrypted message, and the alternate text displayed.

The problem I have is that NOTHING is displayed in the body of the message.  I can see all the header information, but none of the actual message.

Besides, to be honest, the sender has enough problems sending a regular message...I don't believe he knows how to encrypt mail, and doubt he could figure it out on his own...

--Tom Pellitieri
What is the version of notes and server ?
My Domino server and Notes client are both version 5.0.9.  I'm using the local address to my mail.nsf in IE 5.5 on Windows 2000 when I don't see the body.

Also, thank you to everyone who's responded so far...although I don't have a "final" answer yet, I do appreciate the advice.

Hello,
Just curious: is there any special formatting in the mail text that could prevent the text from being rendered? For example, bullets, numbered lists, images, ...
Just guessing here.

It would help if you posted the HTML source code of the message in question here, so we can have a look at it and see if there's anything fishy in the generated code and from there can draw conclusions as to what the user is doing wrong.

To get the HTML source code, just right-click on the opened message body and select "View Source" from the popup window. This should open the HTML code in notepad, so you can copy/paste from there.
I looked at the HTML source for a "good" message and for the "problem" message.  There is NO message body in the HTML for the problem message.  In the good message, the body appears before several "INPUT NAME=" tags at the end.

From Notes, the message appears as plain text with no special formatting, etc.

The page code was quite lengthy, so I posted a copy as a text file at the following web address:

http://hometown.aol.com/pellitieri/private/eehtml.txt

I edited the code to remove personal/company information.  Descriptions of the replacements appear between asterisks, since there were none in the original HTML.  (E.g., *sender* instead of the sender's name).

--Tom Pellitieri
This is the document in read mode I suppose.
All I can see is that the message text simply is not rendered.
Can you open the same mail message in the Notes Client and check hide-when options for the missing text?

You can set hide-when options in rich text per paragraph in the text, independant of the hide-when set for the field itself.

When you edit the message does it display?
The message in question was sent from a browser.  The textapplet and useapplet fields are both "True", so I suspect it was sent using the Text applet.  The browser requires you to enter a different screen to send Rich Text formatted messages.

Although I can bring up text options while creating a RTF mail document to choose "hide-when" options, I don't see a way to find these settings on a message I've received.  There are no "hide-when" type fields in the document properties.  Any suggestions as to how to see the text properties while reading a message?

As I mentioned before, I doubt the sender would be savvy enough to use them, especially since I didn't know they were there until just now (thank you!)

Thanks for your comments, jerrith.  You are correct, this doesn't always happen, and I'm not certain it has always been reported as a problem.

Being able to observe the user while they send mail may be difficult, since he sends his e-mail from home and lives 150 miles away.

Hope I found something on the lotus tech site for you. Seems to be a bug. Use the solution proposed by tech support.

Problem
Using a Notes R5 client, you create a memo in a Mail file that is based on the R5 Mail template (MAIL50.NTF) and fill in all the appropriate fields. You then send the memo by selecting the Escape key and selecting the "Send Only" option in the Close Window dialog box. However, if the recipient of the memo is using a browser to access their R5 Mail file, the body of the memo does not display for the recipient.

Solution
This issue has been reported to Lotus Quality Engineering. It appears that when mail is sent by selecting the Escape key and then selecting the "Send Only" option in the Close Window dialog box, the QuerySave formula is not run and therefore the field 'useapplet' is not set to true. If 'useapplet' is not set to true, the field 'wbody' is hidden. Since 'wbody' is the field that is used to display the body of a memo to web browsers, the body does not display in the web browser.

The only workaround at this time is to use one of the Save options when sending mail to recipients that access their R5 Mail file through a browser. For example, use the Send action button at the top of the Memo form or select the "Send and Save a Copy" option in the Close Window dialog box if you use the Escape key to close and send the memo.

======================================
Hemantha might be on to something here.
Sounds like something an "idiot user", no disrespect inteded, would do.

I have another workaround: change the hide-when formula for the wbody field, so it's always visible in the browser.
I hate to say this, but I think I have an entry for "The Journal of Irreproduceable Results". :-(  I was very hopeful that this would be the solution, but again, it doesn't match our situation...

I tried replicating the problem as stated in Hemantha's latest response.  I used my Notes R5 client to send to someone else.  I hit escape, chose "Send Only", and clicked "OK".  The message was visible in the browser.

Besides, my "idiot user" (and no disrespect noted :->) doesn't have access to the Notes client.  He uses his browser to read and send all mail.

One "oddity", however.  I looked through my InBox and found no documents with a "wbody" (or a "w-anything") field.

Any other suggestions?

Yes, I can't think of anything at the moment.
Is it always the same user that has the problem?
Maybe there's a problem with the java applet running in his browser, due to security restrictions set or something like that. (I suppose the java editor applet is used to enter the body text, so some limited formatting is possible).
You could try for example to set the body text to use HTML in stead of the applet and see what happens then.
Sorry for not replying sooner.

I currently have only one concrete example of the problem.  I have had a few browser users "say" they got blank messages, but none of them bothered to keep them for analysis.  The user who sent the example I have did so from AOL using (I think) a dial-up connection.

I will ask users to monitor and hopefully find additional examples to investigate further.

--Tom Pellitieri
Okay, let us know if you find out anything.
Hopefully we'll be able to provide more possible solutions then...
Okay...I have another pair of examples from my users.

A user with Windows XP on a high-speed cable ISP using Internet Explorer (ver 6?) sent an e-mail to several others.  One recipient who uses AOL replied that he couldn't read the message.  Problem is, the message FROM the AOL account wasn't readable by the original XP user.

Here are the field definitions from the XP user's Sent box that the AOL User said he couldn't see (using *description* for privacy/brevity):

I thought the problem could be that the "useApplet" field was set to "True" by mistake, but other messages with this flag set do appear.

Any thoughts?
I awarded points, even though a "real" answer wasn't available.  The suggestions from jerrith and HemanthaKumar were helpful in my investigation, but did not ultimately solve the problem.  I've awarded points to them both.

We have since upgraded to version 6.0 and most of my external users are using iNotes (a much nicer interface!)  I have had no complaints on this issue since then, so I have no way to pursue it.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the appreciation. Moving to iNotes and R6 was obviously a smart move :-)
Thanks Tom
