Firewall and Ports - Help!

I just purchased a DLINK DI-704 Router. Currently its set to its factory defaults which means its Virtual Server and Special Applications sections are blank (no ports are set). I also have ZoneAlarm Pro 3 installed. Within my house I have 2 PCs connected to the router (Win2K and WinXP systems).

The router works great allowing me to connect to the remote WWW, IRC, and FTP sites without configuring anything. The problem occurs when I log into IRC and try to send a file to a user which happens to be the other PC in my house which is also connected to the IRC channel (naturally this action is just for testing the IRC connection). When I do a DCC send the transfer ALWAYS fails.

Why? I'm sure it has to do with opening ports on the router but I don't get it. Why didnt I have to open a port for MIRC (DCC ports within MIRC are set from 1024-5000) and yet I can send and receive DCC files from remote users in the channel?

Can you also explain to me how I go about "determining" what ports to open for MIRC and FTP if i want to do surfing/serving. I think i heard that FTP can be ports 20,21 and even > 1024?

Thanks.
