In cases where there are the jumpers that are equivalent to.
Master/single  A
Slave Present  B
Slave Drive/Storage C

And the correct settings for Master drive are A and B on and the correct setting for slave is just C on, then you can sometimes get away with just having A set on the Master drive, and setting B and C on the slave drive. Then when you take the slave out the master works correctly as single. Not all drives work like this though.

Alternatively you could get a cable select wired cable and set both to cable select.

The question from magarity and comment from roadwarrior  prompted me to examine the jumper settings on my HD's.  Eureka! The master was set to "master with slave present".  Changing the jumper to "master" solved the problem.

magaraty and roadwarrior:  I feel that you both shared in solving my problem.  I am accepting magaraty's contribution as the answer and shall post a question for roadwarrior who can just post a comment of any kind for 100 points.
