Actually, not entirely true. The Sorenson 3 Pro codec can be used with virtually any video editing/compositing app including FinalCut Pro, Media Cleaner, iMovie, Premiere etc etc etc. This also holds true for the Sorenson lite version included with QTPro. This is because QuickTime as a technology provides the framework for most if not all of these apps.

Last i checked you could get Sorenson 3 Pro for $150.

Does buying the full version really make that much of a difference? There is no way to get that quality without buying the full version?
Again, as far I know, the Pro version has better temporal compression and uses motion prediction which means less 'blockiness' during fast-motion scenes. weed may know more.

Incidentally, weed, how come I cannot access the Sorenson codec via any of my Windows-based video editing apps? That framework you describe doesn't appear to be exposed in any way, shape or form? Perhaps the products you refer to have paid Sorenson a licensing fee for exposing these features?
If I were to buy a product like Premiere or Discreet Cleaner 5.1, does that include the Professional version of the codec or the cheapy version?  I have read in other newsgroups that Sorensen 3 is in those programs, but what version would it be?

Dunno - but you can probably guage it from the price of the program it's bundled with. If Premier is less than c$200 it probably has the cheapy version...they have to make money on both the prog and the codec.
TRG: Those windows apps probably dont provide for access to the QuickTime framework and thus cant access those codecs. Things like FinalCut Pro etc are built around QT technology and programs like Cleaner 5.1 provide support for it.

jeff: If you go to the sorenson website you can find the Pro version of the Sorenson codec bundled with a small app you can use to encode video. It runs about $149.
weed, it is probably the other way around. i.e. QT does not provide for access to its framework. As a programmer, I can see when something is 'open' or not and QT doesn't appear to be...
Since the QT framework provides a basis for large portions of an entire OS, streaming servers, editors, etc i'd have to disagree. QT provides a basis for others to "hook into". If they choose not to use it, that's their problem.
