FAT32 partition on WinXP NTFS

My new computer came preconfigured with Windows XP installed on a 120 gb hd with just one partition (C:), NTFS:( Now i want to use Partition Magic 7.0 to create a new partition where I can install Win98. I have 39.2 mb unallocated space on C: and 114 gb allocated to the rest of the partition. I've tried to use PM to creat a new primary partition on the drive, size 10 gb, but it doesn't work, PM tells me it can't create a new partition on drive 1 when I try to run the wizard.

I have tried to resize the partition in order to make room for the new partition but no matter how i set the slider (even at the default setting) PM tells me that "This partition crosses the 1024 cylinder boundrary and may not be bootable. Can somebody tell me how i can use PM the create a new FAT 32 partition without reformatting the whole drive I would be immensely grateful.

To solve the problem, try any of the following:
- Use PartitionMagic to resize the partition so that it resides completely within the first 8 GB of the hard drive.

I have PM6.0  and 7.0 may be different  not sure   anyway try resizeing the current partition to approx 16000 mg less than it currently is  then before applying the changes select create a new partition useing the 16000 mg of unallocated space     select fat32 and also tell it that you want be installing a OS on the partition (that way it will make it a extended partition instead of makeing it a primary partition ...then apply changes (when it creates a primary partition it by default puts it in front of C and by telling it you aren't installing a OS on the partition it will by default make it an ordinary extended partition   i'm thinking this is where the problem is by telling you it may not be bootable )

only problem now  after it makes these changes is your C will still be ntfs and the extended will be fat32...  ok win98 can be installed to D however it needs to put its boot files on the C (primary partition and this is where the problem is    fat32 cant read a ntfs partition so it wont be able to install the boot files on C

C drive will have to be changed to fat 32 in order to install win98 on any partition     winxp  can care less what partition it gets installed on  but it also needs to install its boot files on C partition in order to dual boot...winxp also needs to be installed after win98 in order to avoid lots of boot problems

not sure but PM 7.0 may be able to change ntfs to fat32   if it can then go for it...

my suggestion would be considering its a new comp and prob doesn't have very much important data installed yet is to repartition the complete drive useing fat32 file system     install win98 first    then xp    and after  this if you so choose change the xp partition to ntfs ( I would leave it all fat32 )

Fixed it myself (with a little help from an MS newsgroup). Trekie1 was on the right way.

The trick is to resize the existing partition at the beginning enough to make room for a new fat32 partition, (must start within the 8.192 mb mark). Then, in pm7, use the "hide" option to hide the existing c: partition, make booth partitions primary and reboot.

Now boot from a win98 startdisk and install win98, since I used the pm7:s hide option, win98 can't see the c: partition and will be installing into the d: partition, thinking its c:. Install bootmagic (a part of pm) in win 98 and create a dual-boot system. Works like a charm. Pm7 i a beautiful piece of software, once you get the hang of it (in which their homepage or helpfiles doesn't aid a lot).

Thanks anyway/CGA1

That solution discusses where the partioion should end, not where it should begin. As I understand, XP and win98 doesn't care where it ends, it just needs to be installed on a partition that begins within this boudrary.
No it doesn't is says " Use PartitionMagic to resize the partition so that it resides completely within the first 8 GB of the hard drive" There is nothing here about where it should end. It's pretty specific and seems to mirror what you did which was making room at the begining of the drive or partition.
