Replacing missing fonts

How do I replace missing fonts so as to ensure I have all that come with W98?

A while ago, in attempting to "clean house" so as to amximize my disk space, I eliminated some fonts that I thought I'd never need ("famous last words.")

Now, sometimes when I'm attempting to read an article on-line, the article looks like hieroglyphics.

I did a 'find" and noticed a fonts cabinet, but I didn't know how to proceed.

can you help me?

To get all the "standard" fonts back you should be able to use System File Checker, go to Start, then Run, type SFC and hit OK this will check your system for missing or changed files, I do not know if this will also do the missing fonts or not, but it does for the system files. I am not at a Win98 machine right now to test this.

worse comes to worse you can always reinstall Win98 over top of itself to replace any missing files.

I've tried the steps outlined in Microsoft's support doc., as pointed to by "CrazyOne."  When I do the extract command, I get a "can not open" for the Win98_22.cab file.

Please help, 'cause I'm in a bad place, having deleted the font registry keys.  So, I'm half out and half in.

DickY
do you have winzip or winrar? these can extract the fonts from the cab file, and then you can install them normally
You can use the Win98 Extract utility from the following site (be sure to read the README.TXT).  Once in place, insert your Win98 CD into your D:\ drive.  Start the Extractor and type *.ttf.  It will place all the ttf files in a folder on your desktop.  When finished, start again and type *.fon.

Now you should be able to install the fonts by directing the font installer to the folder on your desktop.

Hope it helps!
StevenLewis:
I have PKWARE, which I believe is similar to Winzip.
Assuming it is similar, how would I use it on the CAB file for the fonts?

Thanks,
DickY
Did you did it his way.

Copy and paste this the following line and see what happens

Extract /a /e D:\Win98\Win98_22.cab *.ttf /l C:\Windows\NewFonts

if D:\ is not the letter of you CD Drive then replace the D:\ with the letter of your drive. If it still won't open then copy the Win98_22.cab file to your hard drive and then try doing it that way. Of course this

D:\Win98\Win98_22.cab

would have to be changed to

C:\TheFolderYouCopiedTo\Win98_22.cab
------------------------------

Extract /a /e drive:\Win98\Win98_22.cab *.ttf /l C:\Windows\NewFonts (where drive is the drive letter of your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive), and then press ENTER.

For example:
Extract /a /e D:\Win98\Win98_22.cab *.ttf /l C:\Windows\NewFonts <ENTER>
The font files are extracted.

NOTE: In the preceding command, l is a lowercase L.
Type Extract /a /e drive:\Win98\Win98_22.cab *.fon /l C:\Windows\NewFonts, and the press ENTER.

The font files are extracted.
Type Extract /a /e drive:\Win98\Win98_22.cab Desktop.ini /l C:\Windows\NewFonts, and the press ENTER.
Before I proceed I just thought of something I probably should have mentioned at the beginning of my question:

My system started out as W95, from Dell.  Then I received a W98 upgrade CD from them, which I used to upgrade to W98.  Since then, I have applied Microsoft's CD: W98 SP1 Update.

So, where should I extract the fonts from - the W95, the W98 upgrade, or the SP1 update???
Try the W98 first and if that doesn't work try the SP1 Update CD.
CrazyOne:
I think I'm going nuts . . .I followed the procedure, after copying the cab files to a temp file on a hard-drive.
Now that I'm done:
in the renamed folder now called "oldfonts" the are 403 objects;
in fonts there are only 5;

When starting the procedure there was a sub-key in the registry called "Fonts"; now there isn't.

BTW, I used the w98 cd to start.

Help!!!
Did you do this

Type Extract /a /e drive:\Win98\Win98_22.cab Desktop.ini /l C:\Windows\NewFonts, and the press ENTER.

The Desktop.ini file is extracted.
Type Exit.

You return to Windows.
----------------------

and then this

Step 4: Rename the Fonts Folders in MS-DOS Mode
Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode. To do this, click Start, and then click Shut Down. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart in MS-DOS mode, and then click OK.
At the C:\Windows prompt, type Attrib -s Fonts, and then press ENTER.
Type Ren Fonts OldFonts, and then press ENTER.
Type Ren NewFonts Fonts, and then press ENTER.
Type Attrib +s Fonts, and then press ENTER.
Step 5: Rename the ttfcache File
At the command prompt, type Attrib -h ttfcache, and then press ENTER.
Type Rename ttfcache oldcache, and then press ENTER.
Step 6: Restart Windows and Open the Fonts Folder
Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

The computer restarts.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type C:\Windows\Fonts, and then click OK.
In the Fonts dialog box, click Close on the File menu.
yes, all of it; and all of it looked "ok" when they ran.
not familiar with pkware, but if it's like winzip, just unzip the cab file, and then go to control panel, fonts, file-->install new fonts, and point it to where you have unzipped the cab file
Just reinstall 98 on top of the previous installation in the c:\windows directory. If you can't copy from a cabinet file on your 98 CD it could be dirty or damaged. Try cleaning the CD or another 98 CD
I believe what you will need to do is open the font folder and and on the menu bar File > Install New Font and point it to the OldFonts folder.

You should at least read the posted comments before posting something, I mentioned reinstall in the very first comment, and like I stated "if worse comes to worse" then try that, not first and only thing to do.

Well I hope you learned the way we operate here and will from now on try to be a contributing member and not a "newbie" answer snatcher.
Welcome to the site
:>)

Now that is the Ray I know. LOL
Sorry I'v been away from my computer today . . . so I missed all the "fun" comments back and forth.

Here's where I am:
1) I redid the whole script from Microsoft, as first suggested by CrazyOne (except, when I started I no longer have a "font" key in the registry).
2) When done, and when I looked in the Fonts file, there were only 5 objects.
3) So then I followed StevenLewis' suggestion, and used the "control panel/fonts" to add over 398 fonts.
4) However, after re-booting, if I look in Fonts, it still only displays 5 font objects; and, there is no Font key in the registry.
5) Consequently, I dont know if I'm OK or not.  Help!
Your fonts folder is a system folder, what are the options you have chosen for folder options (you should have show all files)
I do have "show all files" for my folder options, for both the Windows folder and the Fonts folder within it.

I couldn't access your last post until a while ago . . . there seemed to be a problem w/Experts exchange.  Anyway, thanks! I imported the saved "fontkey" and everything looks "OK" now.

Seems like M$ left off the part about importing back the saved "fontkey", or did I miss something????

Regards,
Dick Y.
No, your post about not having the kont key in your reg led me to give you the advice about importing back the font key
Glad you're up and running
Steve
Hrrmph.
Spence, why the "Hrrmph"
Just having fun with you Steve. It is the old adage in football terms like in a collaboration effort like this that the team gets the ball down to the goal line but the one that gets it in for the touchdown gets the glory. I went Hrmph because I was going to post about importing the reg file but I forgot. Just a case of sour grapes coupled with having a bad day is all. :>)

Sorry Steve. Please accept my apologies.
That's OK Spence, and hope your day gets better (it's night time here)
:~)
Well the night hasn't started out any better. But a least we got some rain in this drought stricken area of the country. I think I am getting a cold or flu or something so it is affecting my attitude.
"so it is affecting my attitude"

Going from bad to worse? I didn't think it could get any worse.
:>)

Hehehehe. Ah shutup Ray who invited you to the party anyway. LOL
