ISP will not allow routers for DSL

My ISP has said that I can't use a router to share my new DSL connection? Is this just an honor system or will it actually be blocked – I thought a router allowed all the users to share the same IP? The more I learn the more confused I get. Does this mean that I have to build a traditional ethernet network and have one computer set as the internet server? What’s the cheapest way around this problem - its for my house at college - aesthetics are of little concern.

Thanks.

So the reality of the situation is that ISPs, althought they may restrict use (via the service contract) of sharing a connection, they have no technical means of actually preventing the subsciber from using a router.

Correct?

Thanks Irmoore.
