Data Transfer using ethernet connections

I have a laptop running windows 95 and a pretty new pc running XP home edition (i dont have the cd)...

I want to backup all of the files from the laptop to my xp box, but the only way i can connect them is through directly connecting them through an ethernet connection.

The laptop is also connected to a dsl connection, which the xp box shares through a router. How can i transfer the files from the laptop to the xp box?

is it possible by directly connecting their 2 lan cards together?

i have tried connecting them to the same network by altering their workgroup names, but although the xp box could see the other computer, it couldn't gain access to it as "the network path could not be found" and the laptop couldnt even see the xp box...

any help would be greatly appreciated as my hair is gonna fall out soon!!!!!!!!! :)
