Try a low level format then repartition and format again. Depending on the manufacturer of your drive you can get a low level format utility from the drive manufacturer's web site. Hope this is helpfull.

ok i got it to format the HD.  but now i'm trying to load windows nt.  how do i load windows nt using dos
Make boot disks, and use them to boot, or if you have a windows NT original CD, then that should boot if it's set correctly in the BIOS. Once setup runs you should be fine.

By the way the bootdisk app is in the \BOOTDISK folder on your NT CD. You'll need 3 floppies.
Hi for installing NT.
do you have a CDrom ,then see if it is bootable then
boot the PC with the NT installation CDROM and start installation

or

create a boot disk using

http://www.computerhope.com/boot.htm

and boot with the floppy and use NT cdrom
and install it

You can also go to www.bootdisk.com to get the floppies, if you can't make them at that computer. (If you don't have access to the CD drive.)

They have self-extracting images there.
i got windows nt to setup but when it restarted it froze and nothing came up.  could it be the MoBo
Yeah, NT's a bad bet for a computer nowadays, and has a lot of hardware disagreements. If you want NT-based go with 2000, otherwise use 98 SE or XP.
How many partitions on your hard disk? how are they set up? If want a sure-fire way to make it work, format your whole hard disk and just make one NTFS partition.
Have you changed the data cable? Also what does the UIA sector contain? The hard drives will seem to be ok, but if the UIA Sector information is corrupt, it wouldn't work properly. You might need to clean out the UIA Sector and also do a reset on MBR. I'll send you both programs if you need it.
If you are sure your HD is sound, a win NT installation might be done like this:

Boot from a DOS or w9X bootable floppy that has CD support. Run fdisk and create a FAT partition (up to 2GB). Format (NO /s!).  Run "winnt /B" from the i386 directory on the CD ( /B to get out of creating floppies). Install on the FAT partition. You may want to convert to NTFS. Unless there are HW incompatibility issues, this procedure ususally works OK.

If there is additional space on the HD, this can be administered from within NT after installation. Install Sp 6a.
