I am new to networking and have a simple, but loaded question.

I understand that the motherboard of a server can have 1 or more processors and one or more slots for memory. I also understand what RAID is and the importance of it. I under that SCSI drives are faster than IDE and why.

What I don't understand is what configuration I would choose for each particular need and why. For example, I need to purchase a server that will run a proprietary application using Foxpro. There are 40 workstations that log into this application and add/modify data throughout the workday.

Should the server have multiple processors or just one - WHY?

How many redundant drives should it have - WHY?

How much memory and/or how many slots should it have - WHY?

What hard drives are best - WHY?

Any other tidbits of info would be great.
Thanks - DLockwood
