Repairing Hard Disk Drive
I was using seagate ST 31720A (1.7 GB)drive. I had very important data on it.
Problem is:
1. It is now not recognised(Auto detect) by CMOS in Master or Slave mode but recognised correctly only when set with Master with non-ATI slave(only during manual BIOS setup mode and auto detect Hard Disk Drive).
2. But while booting normally it is still showing hard disk failure error.
3. I want to try, replacing the circuit of this HDD with some other HDD.
4. My question is while doing this experiment circuit of which HDD can i experiment with or what considerations i must keep in my mind.
5. pl help in confidance.
Vivek

1. If the data is really critical, and you can afford it, take the drive to specialists. They have sophisticated equipment (clean rooms, rigs to mount the drive platters on etc.) with which they can extract the data. Do NOT gamble and try getting the data off yourself unless you really know what you're doing.
2. The control circuitry on HDD's are usually fairly simple to replace: just a few screws (you might need a specialized screwdriver/key) and sockets to unplug. However, make sure you replace it with EXACTLY the same type again, even if you have to buy a complete drive (try looking for second-hand drives of the same type)
3. Do NOT try so-called recovery software. They might be OK for minor issues (bad sector etc.) but almost always mess up things even more than they already are in situations like this.
Anyway, good luck; you'll need it!
