Exchange sever and ISA
Hi ,
im in the planning process to rollout ISA and here is one thing im unsure about
We have an an external mx record say mail.abc.com IP 7.7.7.7 , this points to our current firewall which then sends the requests to the internal Exchange box
I want to be able to continue to send / receive mail as normal using ISA . the ISA Box will have a different ip and DNS name.
How do i setup ISA to contine as normal when I bring down the old Firewall........
Thanks

1) from a NT/2000 command prompt: nslookup , server 198.6.1.5 , set type=mx , abc.com
The commands are seperated by , and the results should look like those I pasted for yahoo.com. You will probably have only one MX entry. Write down its preference.
2) Yes, add a second MX record, and its associated A record (to tie the mail2.abc.com to an IP address), and delete the old record once your migration is complete. Or better yet, change the preference of your old record to a lower number, and leave an SMTP server set up in the event your mail server crashes, It can be configured to receive email until the main system is restored. It wont distribute, but if configured properly, it will forward the cached mail to your Exchange server once it is back up and running.

Is the Ip address after "server" ie 198.6.1.5 in your example , the ip address of the abc.com or mail.abc.com ?
thanks
thanks
198.6.1.5 is a publicly accessible DNS server, I think at UUNET. you can just use this value verbatim, or you can substitute an alternate Public DNS for this IP.
