Information store will not start.

When attempting to start the information store service in Exchange 5.5 I get an error "The Microsoft Exchange Information Store returned service specific error 4294965485"  This message coincides with the failed events id 1120: Error 0xfffff8ed initializing the Microsoft Exhange Server Information Store database.  Event ID 5000 also failed with the same message.  I attempted to repair it using the eseutil but I feel this may have been the wrong thing to do.  If someone could help me it would be appreciated.

Please back up your database files before doing anything in case it comes apart on you.

Hope this helps

I forgot to ask you but, when was your last full-backup? If it is handy keep it safe just in case your initial attempt caused further damage, Also, what switch did you apply during the eseutil?

Your choices sound like a restore or repair situation but to be sure first try the eseutil /mh. This does a header dump of the DB and tells you if it is consistent or inconsistent.
If the DB is consistent you should be able to remove the log files and start the DB. If you are dealing with the Information Store you make sure there are only two files in the MDBDATA directory the priv.edb and pub.edb. There may be a MDBDATA directory on different drives so check everywhere. Once you know that the priv.edb and pub.edb are alone start them.
If they are inconsistent you have to repair with an eseutil /p, restore from a backup, or clean out the MDBDATA and start with a fresh DB(this loses all your mailbox data that your users do not have in PST's). Good luck.
