Im new to network, need a little help

I have tried to enable my network card (SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter) using Win XP. I get a message that says the cable is not connected. How is this possible? Imaybe just missing a small item, but I can not figure this out, I would greatly appreciate any information.

Here is my .02$ worth.

First verify that the drivers for your NIC is installed correctly and the card is working ( Go to device manager in System from control panel). the device should not have any yellow or red mark infront of it. If the driver is not installed correctly or not available then reinstall ,it is available at this location.
http://drivers.on-line.net.nz/listing/page018.html  , don't forget to look for w2k/XP ver of the driver

If above said is done and still not working then check if the cable you are using is correct one and is in working order, The other end is connected to working port on Hub or switch etc. It is easy to miss one of these. Here is easy way to resolve such issues in better order.
1. first physically see if the cables(between Ur system and wall socket , then between ur patch panel and switch/hub port) are connected.( you would get this msg if the cable is not connected even if your nic is working perfectly alright)
2. Then look for the LED light indicator on the network card back plate and verify that it is illuminated. If there are more than one then  usually one will be for link speed and other for activity. both of them should be illuminated when the computer is on.If not then usually there is a cable fault some where.
3. Look for driver errors and correct if any
4. Change the PCI port in which this NIC is installed.
5. Change the card if spare is available
6. If NIC is onboard then seek professional help(better not to mess with BIOS if you don't know what to look for- there is a option to switch off this port in there too)

Persistence Pays ( Usually)
Good luck

ok here is how u make a cross over cable incase you don't have the details.

Cross over cable is regular ethernet cables with few wires crossed instead of regular straight cable.

Pin number 1 of first connector(one end) is connected to pin number 3 on the other end
pin number 2 of first connector is connected to pin 6 of other connector

The same applies to other end connector.

all the other pins are straight. you don't need to connect other pin , just pin 1 , 2 ,3 ,6 on both ends need connetion as mentioned above and u will get 10mbps link this way.
SIS900 usually does this if you are using older drives, if you update the drivers it will work fine as I tested before with my machine. you don't need to use the crossover cable if you are not going to connect two computers directly, goto: http://www.sis.com and download the latest driver for SIS900, it will solve the problem,

Good Luck.
