Recording the desktop. Is there a hardware solution?

Hi Guys,

I need to record (in a video format i.e. avi, mpeg2 etc)all the onscreen actions that take place on a PC (don't need sound).

I can use things like CyberCam and Camtasia but I was wondering if there is a hardware solution to this.  Something like the TV cards with a loopback or something.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Woody.

I've never heard of one, although it's possible you can connect the video output of a VIVO (Video In/Video Out) graphics card to the input and record it that way--don't know why you'd want to when software does a much cleaner and better job, though.

The software we are writting is quite processor intesive and running things like camtasia and cybercam seem to slow things down.  If there was a cheap alternative like a small external recorder (like a TIVO thing) then that would be great.  However we would need to be able to comunicate with it and record and play via software.
There is a software in Lotus Smartsuite called Lotus ScreenCam that can do the thing for you. But I dont remember which all output formats are available. AVI format is available. Some version of Lotus Smartsuite is free.
We already have software to do this.  Screencam is actually the worse one we've used.  We are after a cheap hardware solution.
Well, you could use a normal video-out to connect up a TiVo, but I don't know how you'd do the software stop/start thing, sorry.
There must be some sort of hardware out there for this kind of thing.  I don't really want to go down the specialist route as they tend to be stupidly expensive.  A software controlled Tivo type thing would be great.
I'm applying to delete this question now.
A request for deletion has been made.  If no objections, I will handle
