Sound crashes?

The sound on my computer works great, but it intermittently crashes with a loud screeching noise.  It does this no matter what application I'm using, from listening to music to playing games.  My computer is an HP Pavillion and the OS is windows 98.  Is this the sound card going out or something else?  Thanks for any input in advance.

It could be the soundcard or the speakers, have you tried different speakers? What happens after you hear this screech, do you have to reboot to get sound back?

I don't have to reboot to fix the problem, but I do have to close whatever application I was using while it crashed and then reopen it and it works fine again.  I have tried some different speakers already.  Thanks for the input.
It sounds like you need new/latest drivers for your soundcard. This could be a tough one, however, if you just close the program and sound is right back then it really sounds like a conflict or drivers are corrupt. under device manager try updating your driver for the soundcard. Dave

I am downloading a driver that is supposed to be an update right now, I'll see if that fixes it.  I tried using device manager to update the driver, but it said it's using the newest one available on my computer.  I did some searching on my driver and found that some other people were having the same problems and it seems that the consensus is to replace the driver.  The driver I have is a Rockwell Riptide and it's in an HP Pavillion 8565c if that helps.  Thanks, Bryce

Thanks, I had done a search and found the driver and downloaded it, just installed it and rebooted my computer and seen your message for where to find it.  I was about 30 seconds ahead of you on that one I guess, :).  Thanks anyway though.  I have it working now, but like I said before it's an intermittent problem so we'll see how long it works.  Thanks for all the info.

Yeah, intermittent problems are the worst.

That's weird, I had posted and then I just hit refresh to check for any replies and it double-posted my response, guess it's just a quirk of this board.

Thanks

Very quick response time and excellent attitude/personality towards helping.  Very highly recommended.
We learn from each other, you just need to back off and look at what you think is the root cause and most of the time it works! :>)
You can't hit refresh after you posted, you have to leave and come back to the question if you post! :>)
Thanks and if you your problem comes back just post! :>) Dave

Dave,  The sound crashed again today, :(.  Guess that didn't fix it, it was working really good until today.  Any more ideas before I buy a sound card?
Thanks, Bryce
I really think the card has had it, you can remove it and reload it, but most likely wasting your time, it doesn't appear to want to stay running whne you keep a load on it. :>)
I am willing to help you try something if you want, it is your call, but it doesn't sound good.

Yeah, I think I'll just go with a new card.  What card would you recommend?  Thanks for all the help.
It really is user preference, soundblasters are liked by a lot, however, they use a lot of IRQs so I usually pick another one and it depends on what you will be using it for, normal use, gaming etc. A decent card but not over do it unless you have some driving force. I will take a quick look at some. :>)

I have had good luck with yamaha, but others work fine also.

As I indicated it is user preference and what you will be using it for, you can spend about $30 to a few hundred and all of these cards will work fine, pick a name brand not an off name.
