Excel macro runs extremely slow

I inherited an Excel macro that loads, formats and saves a batch of about 150 Excel files.  It worked fine under Windows 98 / Office 97 but now under Windows XP / Office XP it runs extremely slow.

For each file, the macro loads the file(workbook) using Workbooks.Open (<filename>), then runs through an involved formatting routine, then saves and closes the workbook.  Stepping through the code with F8 I noticed that there is a noticeable delay as each formatting command is executed (Application.ScreenUpdate is set to False).

The user has stated that the process of formatting 150+ files is so slow under XP that it is unworkable (a file that took 15 seconds before might take five minutes now).  Any ideas on restoring this process to running fast?
