Error 1628 "failed to complete installation" during installation

I am using Win XP Professional. While trying to install Ulead PhotoImpact 8.0ESD I encountered power failure. Now when I try to install it again, I get the error Error 1628 "failed to complete installation" . Is there a workaround?

try going back to a restore point prior to when you did the "semi-installation" and see if you still get the error code on a new install of the software.
Click Start - Help and Support - Undo changes to your computer with System Restore - Restore my computer to an earlier time - and select a previous restore point .... and follow the instructions.

Dear CrazyOne,
Your solution is for Installshield developer only. I do not have developer on my PC. I am only trying to insatll the program.

Dear Pelejab,
Unfortunately, after recovery from power failure, all my Restore points disappeared!!
Can you uninstall what is already installed? Is there an entry in Add/Remove programs?

If not search the registry for that program and delete any entries you find associated with it. WARNING! Backup your registry before you do this.

You might consider doing this. The power failure may have done some funky things to the registry.

Note the following approcah will not replace any system files.

To start the Windows Recovery Console, use any of the following methods:
Start your computer by using the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press R to repair, and start the Windows Recovery Console. From here do something like the following. Or if the file system is FAT32 you can use a Win98 bootdisk to do this. www.bootdisk.com

copy c:\Windows\repair\TheParticularHive C:\Windows\system32\config\

This will replace the registry hive to the last time that hive was bacped up. Hopefully you didn't backup the registry at the time the problems started to happen.

Following is a list of the files that are the registry hives. I would suggest starting with the SYSTEM hive and then reboot and if the problem still persists do the SOFTWARE hive next. Note these files don't have a file extension on them

DEFAULT
SAM
SECURITY
SOFTWARE
SYSTEM

I would suggest to first backup or rename these hives from the C:\Windows\system32\config\ to folder of your making or choice just don't back them up to the C:\Windows\repair\ folder.

You will probably need to reapply any services patches that you have previously installed.

To start the Windows Recovery Console, use any of the following methods:
Start your computer by using the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press R to repair, and start the Windows Recovery Console.

We value our experts who are investing their time and effort to solve Q's for others. That's why I kindly ask you to read the grading text and add a comment or the grade given fits the description or that I have to make a change.

When no comment has been added within 72 hrs I'll change the grade to an "A"

Thanks !

I have asked Q about ver 8.... the reply relates to Ver 7. But it has actually given me some clue to solve the problem
Normally we expect a comment to inform the expert that his information wasn't sufficient.
Some experts prefer to have no points instead of a C graded question.

Thus I would propose to settle on a B as you're right about the comment not being worth an A, but no signal has been posted for the expert.

I want to convert to B but how can I do that now?
Only moderators can :-)

So I did it for you.

Thanks !
