I HAVE AN XP AND A 98 THAT I WANT TO HOOK UP TO 1 CABLE MODEM SO BOTH CAN ACCESS THE INTERNET.  I NEED SOME WAY THAT'S PREFERABLY FREE.  I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT DOING THIS TYPE OF THING.  I HAVE READ HOW U CAN USE NETWORKING WITH SOME KIND OF ISP ADDRESSES OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.  CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME EXACT INFO ON HOW TO SET THIS ALL UP USING SOMETHING LIKE WINGATE?  I REALLY DON'T WANT TO SPEND THE MONEY FOR A ROUTER/HUB.  ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Get a 4 port switch, they are very cheap ($30-$60).  They are easy to install and often come with firewalls built in.  This is the best way to go.  Let me know if I can be of more help.

There is no free solution. The cheapest solution is purchasing a second NIC card for your xp machine and run ICS.

On your 98 box.
------------------------
IP Address     192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask    255.255.255.0
Gateway        192.168.0.1

On your xp box.
-------------------------
Second NIC
----------
IP Address     192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask    255.255.255.0
Gateway

In the properties of the NIC that is plugged into your cable modem, you should have an option that says something along the line of "I Want to Share this Connection".

Hope this helps.

I forgot to mention you need a cross-over cable to connect to two cards together.

Though Defore mentions the cheapest way, you must have the other computer on at the time when you want the other to access the net. Also , you would have issues with certain application and games running on the 2nd PC

This way also provides no security for your main PC.

What i recommend is to purchase  a linksys 4 port dsl/cable router   the following link is the cheapest i found out there.

This allows you to easily connect mulitple PCs to the net as well as provides a basic firewall to separate your computer from the outside world
