Creating new toolbar button from an image

from Visual C++, how do I somehow create a new toolbar button from an existing image (in what format...)?
The tool to create it in VC++ is just quite cummbersome for me?

1) Bring up the image in the Paintbrush application (MsPaint.Exe)
2) use the selection tool to draw a rectangle around it.
3) press the Ctrl+C (press and hold the Ctrl key, then strike the C key while still pressing Ctrl, then release both keys).

4) now in the VC++ resourse editor, past the copued image into the button (press Ctrl+V -- press and hold the Ctrl key, then strike the V key while still pressing Ctrl, then release both keys)
