LaTeX error when compiling

on
Hi!

I have a problem when compiling my LaTeX document with danish character encoding.. Here's the top of the document:

\documentclass [a4paper] {letter}
\usepackage [latin1] {inputenc}
\usepackage [danish] {babel}

And here's the error:
Package babel Warning: No hyphenation patterns were loaded for
(babel)                the language `Danish'

I should have the danish language package installed - this output come's before the error when compiling:
This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (MiKTeX 2.2)
(prebens °nskeseddel.tex
LaTeX2e <2001/06/01>
Babel <v3.7h> and hyphenation patterns for english, french, german, ngerman, du
(C:\program files\texmf\tex\latex\base\letter.cls
Document Class: letter 1999/04/29 v1.2z Standard LaTeX document class
(C:\program files\texmf\tex\latex\base\size10.clo))
(C:\program files\texmf\tex\latex\base\inputenc.sty
(C:\program files\texmf\tex\latex\base\latin1.def))
(C:\program files\texmf\tex\generic\Babel\babel.sty
(C:\program files\texmf\tex\generic\Babel\danish.ldf
(C:\program files\texmf\tex\generic\Babel\babel.def)

I can't see why it won't compile..

I'm running MS Windows XP with MikTeX!

Thanks!

I can only see a warning and no error :-)

The warning occurs, because the danish hyphens are not loaded ... Edit your /etc/texmf/language.dat and uncomment the line starting with "danish".

To change your MikTeX installation I found following path:

c:\texmf\tex\generic\hyphen\local\language.dat
(if MikTeX is installed on drive c).

Then make an "initexmf --dump=latex" (or plain instead of latex).
This rebuilds your  latex format file (which includes the hyphens).

c:\texmf\tex\generic\config\language.dat (NB - another path should be used in my case).

Yeah - this the correct way - thanks!!! Now It works...

The thing works on windows - but what about Linux? I installed the tetex package at my gentoo distribution, and the command "initexmf --dump=latex" isn't there - what do I need to type instead?

Commented:
To dump a latex format file with tetex just use initex. e.g.: initex /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/latex.ltx

Then read the output, it tells what's going on and which files are involved. After that a new latex.fmt should exists.

Commented:
Well I've now been trying to configure the babel with danish hyphens, but the /etc/texmf/language.dat doesn't exist? The files called language.dat on my computer are located in these directories:
/usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/language.dat
/usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/language.dat
/var/lib/texmf/tex/generic/config/language.dat

I've tried editing the first file, but then I also tried to run "initex /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/base/latex.ltx" and watching at the output, it doesn't seem to include the langauge.dat file anyway  -  where's should I configure which file to include, and which file should I edit?

Thanks..
