Mess after SP2

My w2k box wasn't looking good lately, so I installed the SP2 again. However, what happened was something similar to a clean w2k setup. I was asked for the cd, the setup utility was invoked by the SP2 installer or something... Strange stuff. Fortunately I didn't lose the admin profile and all data. Since then I have some (strange of course) problems:

- Each time I run IE, a "Windows Installer" popup window pops up, saying "preparing to install" for half a second. This happens twice. After that, all ok.

- IE itself (v.5 and 6) will never fit the html page properly. It's *always* um ..smaller, thus having always the horizontal scroll bar active, just for a few pixels.

There are also some other minor yet strange stuff which I am too tired to write about. ANY ideas welcome. I'll give the points only after results from specific ideas.

Is this a Domain Controller?
What is the function of this machine?

If it is not a Domain Controller or a important machine in your network backup the machine and reinstall from scatch. You can chase a problem like this for a long time.

More problems... Word doesn't work now! And that installer popup gets on my face very often!

The machine is a home pc --v heavily used though. No domain.

Will try SP3 asap. And a new profile.

If you took the option to backup your existing config during the SP2 set up you could navigate to C:\winnt\$servicepackuninstall%\spuninst and run spuninst.exe.  If this reverses the problems you could reinstall SP2.

Before you do this you may wish to try the SFC utility (Start>Run, then type "sfc /scannow" at the command line.

SFC had no effect...

I have the strong suspicion that Norton Antivirus 2003 harmed my windows. And the change/uninstall button is disabled in Add/Remove Progs.

After a long sequence of SP installs (SP3 unsuccessful, then 2 times SP2 and one time SP3) things seem to be in order. Only now I managed to uninstall Norton AV 2003 which I am pretty sure had caused all the chaos (really spooky!)

I am willing to give the points away, but who to??
Just as a heads up, next time you install something on your machine, turn of Norton AV.  It sometimes creates these small issues.   If you want to assign the points out to those who helped you.  Go into community support and tell them to close this question and that your are going to assign points to those who tried to help you.  Then go back into the Win 2K section and create questions with "points for <name>" in the subject

Hello stretchsp,
-It is alot of points.. Unless I'm wrong the longest comment is 4 lines.. no one has really invested much time and effort on this question or hit the problem source dead on as they say..

I personally think you should delete the question and use the points for a seperate issue..
