I'm pretty sure this is taken from the windows associations.  Its different in different versions of windows, but generally set through explorer.

i tried that already, but it did not work.  I am using Lotus Notes R5 and Windows 98.

here is what i've tried:

1) open window explorer
2) View->Folder Option-> set the corresponding icons for the files.

If you fix the file association in Explorer as Andrew says, that should fix the icon for any NEW attachments that you create, however this will not do anything for existing attachments that were created previously. These will have to be removed and then re-attached in order to change their icon.

simplex,

if i change the icon, i will be setting a ms word or excel icon for all attachments, so that won't work.  but thanks for the help.

scott,

i notice that the icons appear correspondingly when the attachment is from me.  the same, if i receive attachments from other notes servers.  But if i receive attachments from like yahoo or hotmail or servers other than notes server, it uses the default file attachments icon (fileatt.gif).
thanks for the help.

Which icon is used is determined AT THE EXACT MOMENT THE FILE IS ATTACHED. After that it WILL NEVER CHANGE, except for maybe if it passes through SMTP MTA or something and then it might get converted to a generic icon.

The reason you get a generic icon on mails sent to you from yahoo or hotmail is that yahoo and hotmail users ARE NOT USING Lotus Notes to send you a mail, they are just sending you a mail through MIME. At the moment someone at yahoo attaches a file, because they are not even using Lotus Notes, no application-specific icon is created. Therefore, you will just see a generic icon when you receive their mail. The act of you editing that piece of mail, removing the attachment, then re-attaching it, would then give you the application-specific icon, because, again, this is determined AT THE MOMENT THE FILE IS ATTACHED. Sorry if I am repeating myself....

There is really no way around this, this is just how it works.

Scott
