okay, i'm running linux with oracle.  i have set up a export scritp for backup of database.  when the script is run manually if completes fine and writes out to the correct dir.  when it runs from the cron it doesn't write out to the dir.  does there need to be certain permissions set for the dir structure for it to run properly from cron?  thanks for any help.

sounds like a common oracle(user) problem.
try to use your cron as follows:

* * * * * /bin/su - oracleuser -c /path/to/your/backupscript

(replace all values appropriate)

Commented:
what user's crontab is it in?  If it's in the rot users, you need to su - oracle -c {SCRIPT}, otherwise, put it in the oracle users crontab.  Login as oracle.  crontab -e.  add "* * * * * /{script}

Should work this way.
