Slow POST testing; OS boot up

Why would a machine with the following specifications take a total of 3 minutes and 22 seconds to boot up? That time is from when the button is pressed, till the OS (Millennium) is fully booted up.

Machine specs:

Intel DG15EEA Desktop Board; Intel PIII 800EB MHz processor, 256MB PC133 RAM.

RAM has been tested and is OK. PC Pitstop give the machine a clean bill of health.

The only problems found were a faulty CD-ROM, since disconnected, and the VGA adapter drivers are not microsoft signed.

Once booted up, it runs like a train. MS Word loads in about 3 seconds and Corel Word Perfect in just over 4 seconds.

There are no boot sector viruses and the rest of the machine is clean.
There are no error messages, no system freezes, no blue screens.

Any ideas?

Look in the startup menu and see how much junk is being loaded up.  Start-Run-MSCONFIG and uncheck things in the startup tab.  Does it boot quickly now?

If you are not on a LAN and you have an ethernet adapter installed (onboard most likely), disable the adapter in BIOS setup and/or remove all protocols associated with the adapter.

On startup, your system finds the ethernet adapter, and tries to connect to a LAN. This may take a few minutes, until none is found, and the rest of the boot proceeds.
1] check if you have an anti-virus program scanning at boot-up
2] check in the bios to see if it is set to  detect automatically hardrives? It may still be looking for the CD Rom you removed.
