Win2K Home networking with other machines

Hello All,

Thank you for looking at my question.

I have a Win2K machine that I use to browse the internet. I am connecting to SBC's DSL network. I need to enter a user name password to access the netwok and it provides me a 63.---.---.--- ip address. I have room mates who would like to also access the internet on their own machines. For that purpose I bought the Linksys 8-port work group switch. I have connected the modem to the wall and the wire from the modem is connected to the uplink port of the switch. From one of the ports on the switch, I have connected the computer and I am able to login to the DSL the provider and access this site among others.

When I connect other computers to the switch I am not able to see the internet even after setting to DHCP. I am thinking that I do not have the DHCP server set up on the Win 2K machine. I have only one ethernet Adapter on the Win2k machine

Do I need to install something on the win 2k machine or the other machines.

How will I be able to make sure that the other machines do have access to the internet...

Please help me...

Thank you

Naveen

OK, this service seems to only provide one IP for one computer to use their network.  To use other computers, plug the cable from the wall back into the computer directly.  Install a second network card in this computer and connect it to the Linksys switch.  Then simply use Windows Internet Connection Sharing so the other computers can use the network.  Note that the computer hosting the DSL will need to be turned on (but not necessarily logged in) for the others to use the network.

Either that or take back the Linksys switch and instead buy a DSL router with enough ports.  Here is an example of such:
http://www.linksys.com/Products/product.asp?grid=23&prid=20

The problem is that a special trick needs to be done to share one IP with multiple computers.  A simple switch does not do this so you either need a router or a computer with two network adapters.
PS - Note that if you need more than the 4 ports on that router I linked, there are models with more ports available.  Also, you can plug in the 'uplink' port on a basic network switch to this router and allow more machines.  The given router supports up to 256 computers on one internet provider's IP if you string along enough switches to it.
yep like magarity said , u still can continue the setup u have already. just configure the ICS settings . use dhcp or static address scheme

good luck

PS:

Here is some more information on the setup. Machine one that connects to the internet using the DSL modem is called Abyss and the second one is databank.

when I ping for abyss from databank I get a reply from 192.168.0.1

I have setup the ip address on the databank machine as

IP address : 192.168.0.10
Subnet :255.255.255.0
Default gateway : 192.168.0.1

and I have changed the setting on the databank to use the lan settings.
