Hi

On re installing xp home, after 95% of setup, it tells me setup cannot copy the file onuninst.exe, and then a further 8 or so files it cannot install.  I've tried cleaning the cd etc, but to no avail.  Other advice was to copy it to my hard drive.

What's the syntax to do this?  I've been told to do a win98 fdisk, then c: d:/.*.*>/c:

But that's not working.

Any advice?

many thanks

Whoever told you that definitely told you wrong.  You use the > symbol for output redirection.  You use the COPY command for copying files.  Try the following.
FDISK
remove the partition
recreate the partition
reboot
FORMAT C:
MD C:\CABS
CD C:\CABS
copy d:\i386\*.*
SETUP

The above procedure removes the current partition and puts it back.  By doing this you are completely wiping whatever is already there.  You then format the newly created C drive and put a directory on it to hold the contents of the XP CD.  I used D: as the CD drive letter, yours may be different.  I also used SETUP.  I do not know for sure that this is the command to start the installation from disk, it could be INSTALL or something similar.
on the copy, I would do a /V switch.. to verify the data files are copying to the hard drive correctly

so, the line that says "copy d:\i386\*.*" should say
"copy /v d:\i386\*.*"

but other than that, slink9 has given you good information

I always associate /v with XCOPY but it is also available with COPY.  Good point.
