Too much memory for Windows 98?

I'm using a PC with a dual boot system (Windows XP Home and Windows 98 SE).  The computer has 1 GB RAM (266 Mhz).
Under Windows 98 there are problems (blocking and blue screens). Under Windows XP there are no problems.  Some people tell me that there is too much RAM for Windows 98.  Is there a solution (except removing 512 MB RAM)?
Thank you.

Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288 KB) or less.
Awarding the question to stevenlewis.  Weryil's info is part of the info in steven's links.
