Hi Experts,

I know much about sendmail but now I'm facing very diffrent problem with sendmail. Here are the little info about my problem.

I have Redhat 7.2 linux high end compaq(data centre Prolient 3000)box running Sendmail 8.11.6/8.11.6. Application running on same box :
[1] Snort
[2] Pop3
[3] Sendmail SMTP for 5 servers.

I have a application which is using my sendmail for outgoing SMTP and Application working based on Startdard SMTP RFC. So my problem is application not able to send message to sendmail at 1st attempt -- it will taking 2 to 10 attempt to send messages. My application have logging facility which showing no response from SMTP server -- at the same time sendmail showing following error on syslog:

gAHKeHu22137: SYSERR: putoutmsg (2.myapps.com): error on output channel sending "220 mysmtp.com ESMTP Sendmail 8.11.6/8.11.6; Sun, 17 Nov 2002 20:40:17 GMT": Connection reset by 2.myapps.com
Nov 17 20:40:17 mysmtp sendmail[22137]: NOQUEUE: root@localhost did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA
Nov 17 20:40:22 mysmtp sendmail[22136]: NOQUEUE: 2.mysmtp.com [192.168.1.55] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA

Any body can help me or suggest me some fine tunning tips of sendmail

Arvind

I think the first error message is the significant one. Sendmail on the server is saying that it wasn't able to send it's greeting to the apps server when the apps server connected. That could be duse to some network error, or the apps server may have closed the connection prematurely.

The way to find out what is happening is to run a sniffer (tcpdump or ethereal) and look at what is passing between the application server and the mail server.

Jlevie, One help.

Above system is running Software Raid1 with Root Raid, shud I run fsck on software raid -- suggest me is good idea or bad, I'm suspecting bad inode on that system. I can't reboot that system as its on production.

Don't ever try to run fsk on a mounted file system. Doing so can (and usually does) cause corruption of the file system and complete loss of data.

If you can shut down the applications that use the suspect file system and unmount it, then you could fsck that file system. Otherwise, the safe thing to do is to 'touch /forcefsk' and reboot. If the file /etc/forcefsck is present at boot all file systems will be checked.

Also note that if you suspect a problem with a file system you really should force and fsck and reboot as soon as possible (like immediately). It is entirely possible that one bad area of a filesystem (frequently from a bad block on disk) can cause other more extensive problems. The un-scheduled reboot may be a small problem, but it's better that a larger problem later.

What I'd do in this case would be to run a tcpdump looking only at data associated with one of the app servers (that exhibits the problem). Assuming the apps server had an IP of 10.0.0.10, the command would look like:

tcpdump -n -w tcp-trace host 10.0.0.10 and port 25

then cause the apps server to attempt an SMTP transfer. After you've see it try, stop the tcpdump with a ^C. Look at the transactions with:

tcpdump -n -r tcp-trace -X | more

jlevie , is there any way to find out Bad inode on running system.

You might be able to identify one or more bad inodes by doing an 'ls -lR' on the suspect file system. At least in some cases ls will report an "Input/output error" when it encounters a file or directory entry that's associated with a bad inode.

Could your run a 'tcpdump -s 0 -n -w some-file host myapps.com' and mail me the result (some-file to jim@entrophy-free.net). From the above it looks like there may be some problem with the SMTP transaction, but I'd have to see the contents of the data packets to figure out if that is the case and what might be going wrong.

Jim,

I'd found the problem. Actualy problem in my DNS server not in Sendmail. Don't know what is the problem in MY bind DNS. But my problem is solved as I'd changed my DNS to production DNS.. thnx
