I had a HPlaserjet 5M printer locally connected with the serial port A of a SPARC 5 station operating on solaris 2.5.1 This sparc 5 station acts as a printer server and is connected with the other sparc 5 stations through ethernet. Setup in the admintool 'Printer Manager: Local Printer' window indicated :
Printer Type : Postscript
File Contents: Postscript

The printer now has become bad and needs replacement.  But this model is obsolete and not available in the market now.
I tried with HP Laserjet 5N but it did not work.

Which replacement printer should I purchase if I like to make no changes or minimum changes in the existing system to operate the new printer.

If It becomes necessary to change the setup altering the old one, what would be the step by step procedure.

Any of the late laserjet printersshould be a suitable replacement without changing your existing setup. If not you should consider a HP jetdirect compatible printer with a Jetdirect card, this way it will plug into any network hub via an RJ45 connection and just install the driver on the machines that you had the last drivers installed on.
